Why take part in Veganuary?
Veganuary is an annual challenge run by a UK non-profit organisation that promotes and educates about veganism by encouraging people to follow a vegan lifestyle for the month of January.
There are sooo many benefits of being Vegan. See some of the benefits below.
- For the environment: helps to lower our carbon footprints
In Brazil alone, the equivalent of 22.6 billion square metres of land is used to grow soya beans for animals in Europe, just imagine how much the whole process involves. Only a third of that is required to support a plant-based diet!
In practice, by not eating chicken 1-2 times a week, we would save 106kg of our annual greenhouse gas emissions, or driving a regular petrol car 726 miles (check https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-46459714).
- For your health: helps to slim down and be healthier
Vegans are on average up to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters are, and following a plant-based diet actually leaves you with plenty of energy.
Vegans also get all the nutrients that they need to be healthy, such as plant protein, iron, and calcium, without all the nasty stuff in animal products that may slow you down, such as cholesterol and saturated animal fat.
In practice, you can get:
- Proteins from beans, greens, peas, tofu, nuts;
- Iron from dark leafy veg, dark chocolate, sweep potato;
- Calcium from kale, broccoli, fortified milks
As part of Veganuary we have created a set of 5-minute Vegan recipes to help you on your journey!
